Readiness for collaboration
Academic researchers and engineers may engage in research without having the level of social-cultural understanding or experience needed to develop appropriate strategies. They often lack training in participatory methods, facilitation, or cultural humility—skills critical to effective community partnerships. Without this expertise, collaborations can replicate extractive dynamics that marginalize community voices. Additionally, researchers sometimes assume the role of gatekeepers to communities, positioning themselves as intermediaries without being asked to do so.
Solutions
1.
Build capacity through targeted training
Provide academic researchers and engineers with training in community-collaborative research methods, including cultural humility, participatory facilitation, power-sharing approaches, and popular education techniques.
2.
Center community leadership in project design
Work with civil society organizations and community representatives to delegate appropriate responsibilities (e.g., defining key terms, shaping research questions, or advising on data collection) to community partners. Ensure fair compensation for their time and expertise.
3.
Adopt participatory educational approaches
Use popular education methods to support mutual learning and co-creation of knowledge, helping to balance expertise and create a more inclusive research environment.
